Funguys Swarm Ersa

The day-one Water Freeze specialist — less raw HP, a regenerating shield, and the best first pick in the roster.

Ersa — Water Freeze Guide

Overview

Ersa is the second original starter from Early Access day one, sitting beside Shroomba as the other character you can pick before Nutcase, the January 2026 roster, or the 1.0 Ube trio. She is the Water Freeze specialist and the best beginner pick in Funguys Swarm after Stairway Games shipped 1.0 on August 25, 2026 across Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and the Microsoft Store.

Where Shroomba teaches contact melee, Ersa teaches space. Freeze slows or stops swarms so you can collect XP, dash through gaps, and read boss tells. GameSpew and other coverage repeatedly flag the same trade: less HP, but a regenerating shield. That is not a license to facetank Dragonfruit. It is a buffer that refills if you stop taking hits, which Freeze is designed to help you do.

The December 2025 Starpath update redesigned Ersa with a fiercer look, matching Shroomba’s pass. The kit stayed Water Freeze. If older screenshots look softer, that is the pre-Starpath art, not a different character.

Playstyle

Ersa’s loop is apply Freeze, move through the locked pack, vacuum XP, repeat. You still auto-attack; Freeze is not a reason to hide in a corner. You simply refuse to play the same “stand in the blender” game that Chimpy or melee Shroomba sometimes want.

Shield management is the hidden skill. Regenerating shield rewards clean streaks. Taking chip forever keeps the shield down and exposes the lower HP pool. Dash away, let Freeze hold the lane, and only re-enter when the shield is back. That rhythm also maps cleanly onto Steam Deck Verified play: freeze the cluster, breathe, then walk.

Do not confuse Ersa with Steve, the 1.0 Water automation character who auto-picks Water cards. Ersa is the original Freeze starter; Steve is a later specialist. Do not confuse her with Fuzzbug either. Fuzzbug is a January 2026 Night summoner, not a day-one starter.

Water Freeze and the Stardust Trophy

Water is one of the seven elements — Beast, Water, Sky, Night, Nature, Earth, and Fire — and Ersa’s identity lives there. Freeze is crowd control first and damage second. Weapon-attack Water skills that apply Freeze on hit are the most natural pairing; cooldown Water such as Frozen Splash adds a pulse you do not have to aim. Pickup skills still matter because one of Ersa’s trophies is explicit: complete Frozen Pond with the Stardust skill card.

Stardust is a pickup-triggered skill on the Skills and Weapons list. The trophy is a build constraint, not a flavor line. Plan a Frozen Pond farming session, take Stardust when it appears, and finish the arena with it in the deck. Magnetika from Pets and Treelings makes pickup skills more honest because beans reach you faster.

Weapons can be mixed across heroes. Ersa does not need Shroomba’s Watermelon Axe. A faster weapon that applies Freeze more often is usually better than a slow melee that forces shield trades. If a shop melee feels great, take it — mixing is allowed — but judge it by Freeze uptime, not by mascot nostalgia.

Best Builds and Elements

Water-primary is the default. Stack Freeze sources so elites cannot walk through you during Carrot Farm bosses or Frozen Pond ice. The Best Builds page lists dash-triggered, weapon-attack, and cooldown skeletons; Ersa can wear all three if Water stays in the majority.

Sky is the best second color. Mobility and shock slow moving targets so Freeze can land. Earth is the sturdy second color: Iron Shroom and other area cooldowns cover what Freeze misses. Beast is raw damage if Freeze uptime is already high.

Avoid turning Ersa into a Night orbit character. That is Fuzzbug after the March 2026 pixie pass. Avoid HP-to-Armor conversion fantasies; that is Chimpy. Nature poison belongs to Groovba. Fire is a late splash once you understand curses, not a beginner trunk.

Three to five skills beat eight disconnected cards. Freeze application, one dash skill, one pickup or cooldown pulse is enough to clear into Egglosseum while you fund the Sanctuary.

Treeling Synergy

Slo Moe is Ersa’s best friend. Slowed projectiles plus Freeze is two layers of “not yet.” Frozen Pond and Hellscape both throw enough ranged fire that Slo Moe is rarely wasted.

Dashy keeps you from spending the shield on bad dashes. Extra charges mean you dash for i-frames and repositioning, not because you have no other button.

Magnetika feeds Stardust and general XP. The Frozen Pond trophy is easier when pickups come to you.

Furiosy is optional if you are playing a clean freeze kite and can avoid hits. Macho is a safety net if you are still learning shield timing, but it should not replace Freeze discipline.

Pets: Rusdy doubles down on freeze. Starcat accelerates levels so Water cards appear sooner. Quacky is less important than on melee Shroomba because Freeze already creates space.

Arena Notes

Carrot Farm is the tutorial for Freeze. Practice locking a lane, walking the XP line, and dashing only when a chomper breaks freeze. This is also where the Beginner’s Guide and Ersa overlap.

Frozen Pond is Ersa’s showcase and trophy arena. Ice plus Freeze can over-control if you stay greedy; respect floor hazards. Bring Stardust for the trophy run. Rusdy is a luxury here.

Lava Jungle needs Freeze on the safe tiles. Do not freeze yourself into lava. Earth area helps when enemies sit on hazards you cannot enter.

Egglosseum is dense. Freeze still works, but dash charges matter more. Nutcase from November 2025 thrives on dash stacking; Ersa should not copy that entire plan.

Hellscape and the Fire King demand Freeze plus projectile defense. Slo Moe, Forest Strength, and a Water-heavy deck are the honest path. Ersa is frequently near the top of the Character Tier List because this control still works in the final arena.

Steam Early Access saves carry over on Steam only. There is no cross-platform save if you learned Ersa on Deck and then bought a console copy.

Tips

Pick Ersa first if freeze reads better than melee. Pick Shroomba first if you want to learn contact. Both are original starters; Fuzzbug, X-olotl, Chimpy, and Groovba are January 2026 additions, not day-one starters.

Play the regenerating shield honestly. If you are taking chip every second, you have already lost the GameSpew trade.

Farm Frozen Pond with Stardust on purpose. Do not hope a random clear rolls the trophy.

After 1.0, compare Ersa to Steve only if you want Water automation, not because they share a color. Roster context lives on the Players Hub, Characters Hub, January 2026 update, and Version 1.0 pages.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about Funguys Swarm.

Is Ersa the best beginner character in Funguys Swarm?

Yes. Ersa is the best beginner pick. Water Freeze crowd control is easier to read than Shroomba's melee contact or the January 2026 specialists. Freeze buys time to learn dash timing, XP paths, and arena bosses without the run ending on the first overcommit.

Does Ersa have less HP than other characters?

Coverage of the game, including GameSpew, describes Ersa as a Water character with less HP but a regenerating shield. Play around the shield: do not trade like Shroomba, and do not stand in damage after the shield is down. The freeze kit exists so you take fewer hits in the first place.

What trophy is tied to Ersa?

Complete Frozen Pond with the Stardust skill card. Stardust is a pickup-triggered skill, so you need Frozen Pond unlocked and Stardust offered (or already in the run) before the clear counts. Farm the arena until the card appears rather than forcing a random skill set.

When was Ersa redesigned?

Ersa received a fiercer visual redesign in the December 2025 Starpath update, the same pass that updated Shroomba. The Water Freeze identity did not change; presentation now matches later arenas and 1.0's Fire King finish.

What elements should Ersa take?

Water is primary. Sky mobility and Earth area help without abandoning freeze. Beast is a fine damage splash. Night pixie scaling belongs to Fuzzbug; Nature armor bombs belong to Chimpy. Keep the deck readable so Freeze remains the plan.
