Shroomba — Melee Mascot Guide

Overview

Shroomba is the original mascot of Funguys Swarm and the roster’s fearless leader. He shipped as an Early Access day-one starter with Ersa — not as part of the later January 2026 wave — and he remains the face of Stairway Games’ single-player survivor after the 1.0 launch on August 25, 2026. If you want a character who looks like the box art, swings in melee, and forgives a few extra hits while you learn Carrot Farm, Shroomba is the intended first impression.

His kit is built around close range. The special skill Iron Shroom is the cooldown pulse that defines him, and the Watermelon Axe is the favorite melee weapon that keeps that pulse honest: you want to be near enemies when it fires, not sniping from a back line. Weapons can be mixed across heroes, so nothing locks you to the Axe forever, but treating Shroomba like a ranged kiter wastes the sturdy melee identity that makes him easy to recommend.

The December 2025 Starpath update redesigned Shroomba with a fiercer look. The cute mascot silhouette is still there, but the presentation now matches the denser late arenas and the Fire King finish in Hellscape. That visual pass did not turn him into a glass-cannon specialist; he is still the beginner-friendly tanky melee option on the Characters Hub.

Playstyle

Play Shroomba like a short-range brawler who uses dash to enter, not to live at the edge of the screen. Auto-attacks from the Watermelon Axe (or another melee you swap in) should be happening while you circle dense packs. Iron Shroom covers the space you just committed to, so your job is positioning: stay close enough for melee, leave before a boss cone deletes you.

Compared with Ersa, you get less freeze lockdown and more contact time. That is why Shroomba teaches dash i-frames and pickup paths so well — you cannot freeze the whole farm and walk away. Compared with later January 2026 specialists such as Fuzzbug or Chimpy, you also skip delayed scaling and HP-to-Armor conversions. Shroomba’s power is front-loaded and readable.

Twitch chat voting exists for streamers, but the game itself is a single-player survivor. Shroomba is a common showcase pick because the mascot reads clearly on stream and the melee loop is easy for chat to follow. On your own machine, treat that the same way: simple verbs, sturdy body, Iron Shroom on cooldown.

Iron Shroom and the Watermelon Axe

Iron Shroom is Shroomba’s special skill. In the wider pool it also appears as an Earth cooldown option on Skills and Weapons, which is why Earth cards feel natural even if you splash Water freeze or Beast raw damage. The important play rule is proximity. Cooldown skills do not care that you dashed to a corner; they care that enemies are still in the pulse when it lands.

The Watermelon Axe is the favorite melee weapon. It keeps Shroomba honest: you are rewarded for standing in the swarm, collecting XP beans as you cut, and letting Sanctuary weapon levels multiply swings you are already taking. If a run offers a strong ranged shop weapon, you can take it — mixing weapons across heroes is allowed — but you should have a reason. A sniper Shroomba is a different character wearing the mascot skin.

Trophies worth planning: defeat Dragonfruit using Shroomba, and 10,000 kills. Dragonfruit is a dedicated Shroomba challenge, not a generic clear. The kill count is a long grind that pairs well with replay farming on Carrot Farm and later arenas once Magnetika is equipped. Check the Unlock Guide for how those goals sit on the Starpath board.

Best Builds and Elements

The seven elements are Beast, Water, Sky, Night, Nature, Earth, and Fire. Shroomba does not force a single color, but Earth is the most honest home for Iron Shroom. Earth cards that add area, cooldown, or raw melee weight keep the special skill relevant into Egglosseum and Hellscape.

Water is the best splash for beginners. Freeze from Water cards buys the extra second you need after a greedy Axe swing. That is not Ersa’s full freeze identity; it is a safety layer so Shroomba can stay melee without eating every carrot-farm chomper.

Beast is the aggressive alternative: more weapon damage, more attack speed, more reason to stay in axe range. Sky helps dash cadence if you are stacking dash-triggered skills from the Best Builds page. Night, Nature, and Fire are optional spices. Night projectile density is Fuzzbug’s story. Nature armor bombs are Chimpy’s story. Fire is strongest when you already understand curse management, not on your first Shroomba hour.

Keep three to five active skills, not a museum. Iron Shroom plus a melee weapon-attack skill plus one dash skill is a complete early skeleton. Sanctuary weapon levels in the Sanctuary matter more than collecting every element icon.

Treeling Synergy

Equip up to three Treelings. Full companion notes live on Pets and Treelings.

Dashy is the mobility pick. Shroomba needs dash to enter melee and to leave boss cones. Extra dash charges turn Iron Shroom setups into a rhythm instead of a panic button.

Slo Moe is the defensive pick. Slowed enemy projectiles give a melee character time to finish a swing instead of eating a Frozen Pond ice shot while winding up.

Magnetika is the farm pick. Shroomba’s 10,000-kill trophy and Dew income both benefit from sucking XP and resources in while you stay in axe range.

Macho is a reasonable fourth option for boss learning. Health pickups after heavy damage help a sturdy melee character who is supposed to take a few hits. Skip Macho only if you later switch to Chimpy, who converts HP away.

Pets: Rusdy’s freeze is a luxury crowd-control layer for melee. Quacky knockback can shove enemies into Iron Shroom range on Carrot Farm. Starcat speeds XP if you are trophy grinding.

Arena Notes

Carrot Farm is Shroomba school. Wide lanes, slow early swarms, and plenty of room to practice axe circling. Learn pickup paths here before you worry about character rankings.

Frozen Pond punishes standing still in ice. Dashy plus Slo Moe matters. If you want freeze yourself, splash Water; do not expect Shroomba to out-control Ersa on this map.

Lava Jungle adds floor hazards. Melee still works if you treat hazards as walls. Iron Shroom is useful when enemies clump on safe tiles.

Egglosseum is tighter and more chaotic. This is where Nutcase from the November 2025 update feels at home; Shroomba can still clear it with focused Earth and disciplined dashes, but you must respect the ring.

Hellscape is the final arena and the Fire King. Sturdy melee is viable if Forest Strength and Sanctuary weapon levels are online. Ban or skip greedy Fire curses until you can read phase cones. Shroomba will not outscale a fully juiced Fuzzbug Night orbit, but he will not collapse in phase one either.

Steam Deck Verified play is a natural fit: short-range aiming is easy on a stick. Early Access saves carry over on Steam only, with no cross-platform saves if you bounce between Epic, consoles, or the Microsoft Store.

Tips

Start here if you are new, then try Ersa when you want freeze instead of toughness. Read the Beginner’s Guide for dash and card basics, then return to this page when you pick the Axe again.

Do not kite like a Night caster. If you are always at max range, Iron Shroom is wasting cooldown on empty grass.

Track the Dragonfruit trophy as a dedicated Shroomba run, not as a side objective on a random character. Track 10,000 kills across farming sessions with Magnetika.

After 1.0, Dr. Botanika, Mr. Midnight, and Steve join the roster, plus a secret character for beating the Fire King. Shroomba is still the mascot you should understand first. The Players Hub and Version 1.0 notes place him in that timeline without turning him into a January 2026 specialist.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about Funguys Swarm.

Is Shroomba a starter character in Funguys Swarm?

Yes. Shroomba is one of the two original Early Access day-one starters alongside Ersa. He is the mascot and fearless leader, not one of the January 2026 roster additions. You can pick him immediately on Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and the Microsoft Store.

What is Iron Shroom and how does it work with Shroomba?

Iron Shroom is Shroomba's special skill and a core Earth cooldown option in the wider skill pool. On Shroomba it is the signature defensive-offensive pulse that matches his sturdy melee identity. Pair it with close-range weapons so the cooldown fires while you are already inside swarm range.

What is Shroomba's favorite weapon?

The Watermelon Axe is Shroomba's favorite melee weapon. Weapons can be mixed across heroes, so you can still run bows, guns, or later shop finds if a run offers them — the Axe is simply the kit that best matches his close-range, tanky playstyle.

What trophies or achievements are tied to Shroomba?

Two notable goals: defeat Dragonfruit while playing Shroomba, and reach 10,000 kills. Both are long-term Starpath-style challenges rather than early-run tutorials, so farm them on familiar arenas after you have Sanctuary upgrades online.

Is Shroomba good for beginners?

Yes. Shroomba is a beginner-friendly sturdy melee pick. He is less about freeze lockdown than Ersa and more about surviving contact, swinging a melee weapon, and letting Iron Shroom cover the space around him while you learn dash timing.
