Groovba — Nature Poison Guide

Overview

Groovba is the Nature poison and debuff specialist from the January 2026 update. He is not a day-one starter. Shroomba and Ersa still fill that role. Groovba arrived with Joomba, Fuzzbug, X-olotl, NutsNBoltz, and Chimpy, then stayed through Stairway Games’ 1.0 launch on August 25, 2026 as the patient Nature option.

Two official numbers define him. Debuffs deal 20% more damage per Nature card. Enemies killed by debuffs have a 2% chance to drop a half heart. Together that is a damage engine and a sustain engine, both gated on letting poison (and other debuffs) finish the kill.

Chimpy is also Nature, but Chimpy converted your HP into Armor and deleted heart drops. Groovba still has a heart bar. If you mix those identities you will play both characters wrong.

Playstyle

Groovba is a DoT controller. Apply poison and other Nature debuffs, then kites so ticks can work. If you greed every last hit with a fast gun, you steal kills from the 2% half-heart rule. Weapons can be mixed across heroes; prefer weapons that apply or support debuffs rather than weapons that snipe the last pixel of HP.

Early Carrot Farm feels slower than Ersa Freeze. Enemies walk while they melt. That is correct. Do not panic-swap into Beast-only cards and abandon the 20% per Nature card. The character comes online when the Nature count is high and packs live long enough to be worth poisoning.

Late game, density is a gift. Many poisoned bodies means many chances at the 2% half heart and many targets for the 20% bonus. Egglosseum and minion phases of the Fire King are where Groovba looks like a sustain tank who also does damage. Bosses that die to burst before ticks land are the awkward matchup — keep a real weapon, not only a trail of poison.

Debuff Numbers

Official:

  • Debuffs deal +20% damage per Nature card
  • Enemies killed by debuffs have a 2% chance to drop a half heart

Nature is the color. The seven-element list still lets you splash Water freeze so enemies stay in the DoT, or Earth area so application is easy. Night pixie stacking is Fuzzbug’s job. Beast clone dashes are X-olotl’s job. Fire is a late curse discussion, not the trunk.

“Killed by debuffs” is the important phrase. A 2% heart does not roll if your Watermelon Axe (borrowed from Shroomba’s favorite, perfectly legal to mix) took the last hit. In boss races, decide whether you want the heart proc or the faster kill. In swarm clearing, let the DoT cook.

Cooldown Nature skills and poison trails from the Skills and Weapons page are the natural home. Pickup skills are optional. Dash skills are mobility, not Groovba’s damage identity.

Best Builds and Elements

Nature-primary. Count Nature cards the way X-olotl counts Beast cards. Each one is 20% more debuff damage.

Water is the best splash: freeze extends time-to-kill, which is what poison wants, and it is the opposite of Chimpy’s “get hit now” plan. Earth is the second splash for application area. Sky is dash quality of life. Beast is only if the weapon needs help finishing bosses that refuse to sit in DoT.

The Best Builds cooldown section already lists Groovba as a Nature poison extension character. Lean into that. Do not force a dash-only Nutcase skeleton unless you are doing it for fun.

Three to five skills. Nature DoT, one freeze or area applicator, one dash. Sanctuary levels in the Sanctuary still multiply the weapon you mix in for bosses.

Treeling Synergy

Magnetika is Nature-card fuel. 20% per card is why you picked Groovba.

Slo Moe keeps enemies in the poison. Frozen Pond and Hellscape projectiles also get slower, which a DoT character needs because you are not always sprinting.

Macho is actually good here. You still have HP. Macho hearts plus the 2% debuff-kill half hearts is double sustain. This is the opposite of Chimpy advice.

Dashy is positioning while ticks work. Furiosy is optional if you can stay clean; poison characters sometimes take chip, so do not require Furiosy.

Pets: Rusdy freeze extends DoT time. Starcat speeds Nature cards. Quacky is lower priority than on melee Shroomba. Full list: Pets and Treelings.

Arena Notes

Carrot Farm is time-to-kill practice. Let poison finish trash. Unlock details, if you still need Groovba, live on the Unlock Guide.

Frozen Pond is excellent: ice plus freeze splash plus poison is three reasons enemies do not reach you. Ersa still owns the Stardust trophy; Groovba just likes the ice.

Lava Jungle is awkward if floor fire forces you off the DoT. Apply, step to a safe tile, let ticks continue.

Egglosseum density feeds 2% hearts. Stay at the edge of packs so you do not eat ring attacks while counting Nature cards.

Hellscape wants Nature stacks before the Fire King. Poison the adds; do not expect a slow DoT to outpace a burst phase unless the weapon mix is real. Read the Fire King guide. Groovba will not match Fuzzbug’s late orbit ceiling or Ersa’s freeze safety, but the sustain plan is unique.

Steam Deck Verified: comfortable kiting. EA saves Steam-only, no cross-platform saves.

Tips

Let debuffs kill. The 2% half heart is a rule, not a vibe.

Stack Nature. 20% per card is the only official scaler on this page.

Do not convert your brain to Chimpy Armor. Groovba has HP. Macho is allowed.

Do not call Groovba a starter. Timeline: January 2026, November 2025 for Nutcase, Version 1.0 for the Ube trio and secret Fire King unlock. Learn the game on the Beginner’s Guide, then compare Groovba on the Character Tier List. Hubs: Players, Characters. Arenas: Arena Walkthrough.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about Funguys Swarm.

How does Groovba's Nature passive work?

Debuffs deal 20% more damage per Nature card. Poison, slows, and other damage-over-time effects get stronger as the Nature count rises. This is a card-count scaler, not a one-time on-hit bomb like Chimpy.

What is the half-heart drop chance?

Enemies killed by debuffs have a 2% chance to drop a half heart. The sustain only exists if the killing blow is the debuff. Burst weapons that snatch the last hit steal the proc.

When was Groovba added?

January 2026, with Joomba, Fuzzbug, X-olotl, NutsNBoltz, and Chimpy. Groovba is not an Early Access day-one starter. Shroomba and Ersa are the original starters.

Is Groovba a beginner character?

He is gentler than Chimpy because he still uses HP and can drop half hearts, but he is slower than Ersa Freeze. Beginners can learn him after Carrot Farm feels comfortable, once they understand that poison needs time to tick.

What Treelings pair with Groovba?

Magnetika funds Nature cards for the 20% debuff bonus. Slo Moe keeps enemies in poison range. Macho plus the 2% half-heart proc is real sustain. Dashy is mobility while dots work. Avoid building as if HP pickups were deleted — that is Chimpy.
